Marc Overmars ban from all footballing activities is set to end this weekend. The former Ajax Sporting Director has been away from Antwerp since his FIFA ban began in January 2024. Overmars did in the past few months sign a new contract with the Belgian club that will run until 2027. While many questioned the timing of this decision, Antwerp stated that this had been agreed at the end of the 2022/2023 season, but was not communicated externally. During his tine with the club they won their first Belgian Pro League title since the 1950s and grabbed the domestic cup.

Overmars left Ajax in February of 2022 after several reports were made relating to inappropriate behaviour towards female staff at the Amsterdam club. The former Arsenal and Barcelona winger is said to have sent photos of his genitals to women. After leaving Ajax, Overmars quickly joined Belgian side Antwerp after his dismissal, something that did not go down well amongst the Antwerp fanbase at the time.
