Former Arsenal and Liverpool goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died in a car crash at the age of 48, the Austrian football federation confirmed.
The first Austrian to play for Arsenal, he made 39 appearances for the club between 1997 and 2002, winning the Premier League and FA Cup in the 1997/98 season. He left in 2002 after falling behind David Seaman and Richard Wright.
Manninger went on to play for a host of European clubs, turning out in Italy for Torino, Udinese, Bologna and Juventus. He also featured for Espanyol and FC Augsburg, and for Red Bull Salzburg in his homeland.
He returned to the Premier League in 2016, initially training with Liverpool to maintain fitness before signing a short-term deal at the age of 39. He did not make a competitive appearance for the club and retired in May 2017.
At international level, Manninger won 33 caps for Austria and appeared at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2008.
