Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United is the talk of the town at the moment. Despite investing heavily in the squad over the summer, the Portuguese head coach has failed to turn things around at Old Trafford so far.
The Red Devils have won two of their six games this season, losing the other three. That includes the humiliating 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brentford over the weekend that has strengthened calls for Amorim’s head.
The Portuguese has struggled to impress since taking charge at the Theatre of Dreams in November last year. He was brought in to take the club towards a new direction following a disappointing end to former manager Erik ten Hag’s reign.
Unfortunately, Amorim has been a shadow of the man who lit up Sporting during his four-year stay at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Amorim has registered a mere 36.73% win ratio with United, managing only 18 wins in 49 games, while losing 19 others. For the record, the Portuguese won 164 of his 231 games with Sporting, losing just 33, with a 71% win ratio.
Last season, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League table and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur by a 1-0 scoreline.
They are already 14th in the league this campaign, and have exited the EFL Cup at the hands of League Two minnows Grimsby Town in Round Two.
On Saturday, United were undone by a Brentford side who had previously won just one of their five games in the league. The situation has added to speculation regarding Amorim’s future, with reports suggesting that INEOS have identified Gareth Southgate as an option for the job.
It now appears that a Spanish manager is also keen to test his mettle at the Theatre of Dreams.
According to acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano, former Barcelona manager Xavi is ready to take charge at Old Trafford. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the journalist added that the Spaniard is ready to join United immediately, despite the lack of European football.
”Xavi is studying the Premier League. Xavi is monitoring the Premier League and would go immediately to Man United. Even without European football, he would go immediately to the Premier League,” said Romano.
Xavi enjoyed decent success during his two-and-a-half-season stay at Camp Nou, winning 89 of 142 games with a 62.68% win ratio. The Spaniard won the LaLiga title and the Supercopa de Espana during his time with the Catalans. He is steeped in Barcelona’s ideology, invested heavily in youth during his tenure, and, most importantly, uses the 4-3-3 formation that many believe the United squad is most suited for.
Interestingly, recent reports have stated that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is willing to be patient with Amorim despite the rocky start to the new campaign.
