Russell Martin has revealed that he's rather enjoyed the break since being sacked by Southampton. At least he's finally stress-free.

Overall, former Southampton manager Russell Martin should be remembered well at St Marys Stadium. After all, it was Martin who achieved promotion back to the Premier League, even when the odds were stacked against us in the play-offs last season.

It is always hard when a team returns to the Premier League. Nobody expected the Saints to set the world alight on their return to the top flight. If anybody expected this, they would have been handed a sore reality check with how this campaign has really turned out.

While nobody expected Southampton to be in the top half of the Premier League table, not many would have expected them to be as rock bottom as they are. 20th, given the teams around them, would have been a more respectable position if they weren't THIS kind of 20th.

Both under Russell Martin and the new manager Ivan Juric, Southampton have massively underperformed. There is an argument to be had that Juric has been a worse manager in the second half of the season than Martin in the first. I hate to say it, but I agree.

Nevertheless, it doesn't appear like Russell Martin is missing the stress of managing Southampton. In fact, his recent comments have revealed quite the opposite.

Russell Martin can finally relax after Southampton sacking

According to the Daily Echo, who quoted Russell Martin's first time speaking about the Southampton sacking, Martin is enjoying the first break from football he's had in 20 years. In his own words, Martin said: "I'm enjoying a break, it's been for a lot for 20 years. It's my first break from football in 20 years."

It's a shame that Southampton haven't enjoyed Russell Martin's break from football as much as Russell Martin has enjoyed his break from football. There is even a portion of fans who want Martin to come back. That's how you know things are bad.

Thinking ahead to the future, Southampton is likely to be back to square one. While relegation isn't an absolute certainty at this stage, we'd be stupid to raise any false hope of safety here. Southampton will probably be in the Championship next season... I only hope that they don't go down by breaking Derby County's record as the worst Premier League team in history.
