Former Sunderland defender Tom Flanagan has retired from football after suffering an Achilles rupture during Colchester United’s pre-season.
He had been preparing for another campaign with the League Two side. He made more than 100 appearances for Sunderland across four seasons, leaving in January 2022 after 22 outings in the promotion-winning campaign. The player said in a statement that he leaves the game with immense pride and gratitude.
His message reflected on a 17-year career across the Championship, League One, League Two and the National League, and on the honour of winning 15 Northern Ireland caps.
He recounted how a routine warm-up on a Friday morning ended everything in an instant, one movement causing a ruptured Achilles and bringing those 17 years to a close in less than a second.
Flanagan urged young professionals to value the daily rhythms of the game, saying medals matter but relationships and memories matter more, and he thanked the clubs, team-mates, staff, opponents and supporters who shaped his journey.
