It was a slow start to the season for the recently resurgent Union St Gilloise under new head coach Sébastien Pocognoli. The side from Brussels have been competing for the Pro League title for the past three seasons under three different head coaches. Over the summer, former West Brom and Brighton defender Pocognoli was given the opportunity to lead the side he finished his career with.
It started slowly, but in recent weeks, Union have been on a role. The side have not lost a game since the end of October, a run of 13 games without defeat. They have won eight of these, with some of those coming in both the cup and the Europa League. Their recent resurgence has been led by the form of young Croatian striker Franjo Ivanovic, who has eight goals and one assist in 21 games across all competitions this season.
Their recent run has seen them in with a chance of European progression, as well as a improvement in the Pro League standings. After a 3-1 win over Gent they have broken into the top six. They are 11 points behind leaders Genk, but as the side well know, once the points are halved for the play offs, anything can happen. It looked like Pocognoli would not be able to get Union going again, but all credit must go to the head coach for turning things around.
