According to Leeds Live, four Leeds United players enter the final six months of their contracts next week, allowing pre-contract talks with overseas clubs from one January.
Their prospects hinge on Leeds’ division and PSR status if they last until summer. Three are goalkeepers, so choices may be interlinked.
Illan Meslier is not renewing this summer and ideally would be sold in January, yet few will pay now given a free move awaits. He has not played this season and needs sharpness. A pre-contract could block a January exit unless withdrawn, so he looks set to leave for nothing.
There is appetite to keep Karl Darlow on a short extension. He has impressed deputising for Lucas Perri. At 35, he could serve as a Premier League number two or, at worst, operate in the Championship.
Views differ on Alex Cairns. He rarely makes squads but is valued in the dressing room and often warms up the starter instead of Meslier. With PSR in mind, Leeds must weigh his likely low wage against promoting Rory Mahady, and he could stay on as a coach if not renewed.
Sam Byram, another academy graduate, appears near the exit. His renewal was uncertain last summer, but Junior Firpo’s departure made keeping him as cover sensible. The 32-year-old came on against Arsenal, then captained the League Cup tie with Sheffield United before going off on 71 minutes, has not featured since, and has been on the bench in four of the last five.
