There is no escaping the disappointment, as Real Madrid fell to a 1-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final at Santiago Bernabeu.
The performance lacked authority, control, and composure. Basically, all the elements that have long defined Madrid’s dominance in Europe.
Under Alvaro Arbeloa, the team has struggled to find a consistent rhythm, and the defeat only added to the growing scrutiny around his tenure.
Yet, if there is one club in world football that refuses to bow to adversity, it is Real Madrid.
The belief within the dressing room remains intact. The margin is narrow, the tie is alive, and history continues to whisper the same message – never rule them out.
On that note, here are four compelling reasons why Los Blancos still have every reason to believe in a comeback at the Allianz Arena.

The first leg exposed two major weaknesses – a lack of midfield control and defensive stability. Without key figures, Madrid looked fragmented, especially in transitions.
That, however, is set to change.
Jude Bellingham is expected to return to the starting XI after being carefully managed following injury.
His brief appearance off the bench in the first leg hinted at what Madrid were missing – energy, composure, and vertical drive.
Simply out, his inclusion in Munich could be transformative, as Bellingham offers creativity and a proper structure.
He connects midfield to attack seamlessly, something Madrid struggled with in the first leg.
Equally important is the expected return of Eder Militao. The Brazilian defender’s presence alone changes the defensive dynamic of the team. His recovery could not have come at a better time.
Speaking about his importance, Arbeloa did not hold back when assessing his influence on the pitch.
The manager highlighted how Militao ups the entire defensive unit, saying, “When Militao is on the pitch, you get the feeling there are two players.”
That quote simply captures everything. Leadership, pace, positioning – Militao brings it all.
Against a dangerous Bayern attack, his return could be decisive.

Another area of concern has been the left-back position. Madrid have looked vulnerable there, particularly against Bayern’s wide threats in the first leg.
Now, Ferland Mendy is set to return and his presence could be a game-changer.
Mendy may not always grab headlines, but his defensive reliability is unmatched.
After a period out, he has returned to form with impressive performances. His recent displays showed exactly why he remains one of the most dependable full-backs in Europe.
In particular, his disciplined positioning and ability to shut down wingers will be crucial against Bayern’s dynamic attackers.
Notably, the first leg highlighted just how dangerous players like Michael Olise can be in wide areas.
Mendy’s return does not just strengthen the defence, it restores confidence. His ability to read the game and win duels could tilt the balance in Madrid’s favour.
Even if his starting spot is not absolutely guaranteed, his availability alone is a major boost. In high-stakes European nights, players like Mendy often make the difference.

Despite the defeat, there were positives in attack and they came largely through Kylian Mbappe.
The French superstar was Madrid’s most dangerous outlet in the first leg, having registered six shots, four of which were on target, while also contributing with key crosses.
More importantly, he found the back of the net, a goal that kept Madrid firmly alive in the tie.
His performance served as a reminder that even when Madrid are not at their best, they possess players capable of turning games in an instant.
There is another key detail that cannot be ignored. While Bayern remain lethal in attack, their defensive structure has shown vulnerability.
As such, Real Madrid managed 20 shots in the first leg, a statistic that shows the opportunities available.
Of course, beating Manuel Neuer is never straightforward, as he is still one of the best in the world.
But the volume of chances suggests that Madrid can, and will, create opportunities again.
If Mbappe maintains that level of threat, Madrid’s chances of a comeback rise significantly.

Beyond tactics, beyond players, there is something else – something intangible yet undeniable.
It is the Real Madrid spirit.
This is a club that thrives in chaos, that finds clarity in pressure, and that turns impossible situations into historic moments.
Time and again, Madrid have shown why they are the kings of Europe.
Their recent history is filled with unforgettable comebacks.
Against Bayern themselves, Madrid produced late drama in the 2023/24 semi-final, with a stunning brace from Joselu sealing their place in the final – a final they went on to win.
Before that, in the 2021/22 campaign, they overturned a deficit against Manchester City in one of the most dramatic nights in Champions League history.
Three late goals turned despair into triumph.
That same season saw unforgettable turnarounds against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, matches that defined Madrid’s never-say-die attitude.
These are not coincidences. They show a pattern that when the lights shine brightest, Real Madrid respond.
