Franco Baresi, the iconic former AC Milan captain, has died aged 66.
The club said in a post that he would forever, like his number six shirt, remain a fundamental part of Milan’s identity and history.

A one‑club defender from 1977 to 1997, Baresi won six Serie A titles and three European Cups, in 1989, 1990 and 1994.
He won 81 caps for Italy, lifted the 1982 World Cup as a non‑playing squad member, and captained the Azzurri to the 1994 final.
In 2020 he became AC Milan’s honorary vice‑president.
Last summer he underwent surgery to remove a lung nodule discovered during a routine check.
Despite those health issues, he carried the flame at the Milan‑Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony at the start of 2026.
