Frank Lampard must do all he can to bring Chelsea's Marc Guiu to Coventry City, with Ipswich Town tracking the striker.
Coventry City have had a productive start to the window, with Miguel Angel Brau and Kaine Kesler-Hayden already through the door.
Frank Lampard’s appointment sparked a major turnaround last season, with the Sky Blues reaching the play-offs before losing to Sunderland in the semi-final in heartbreaking fashion, so it’s fair to say that major surgery isn’t required in this window.
However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t problems that need to be addressed, and bringing in a striker should be a priority for Lampard.
With Ellis Simms, Haji Wright, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Norman Bassette all on the books, it might seem strange to say a striker is required.
However, Wright was the only player to hit double figures last season, and the USA international is frustrating at times, even if he does have quality.
Lampard’s reluctance to use Simms during the play-off semi-final spoke volumes, whilst Thomas-Asante hasn’t convinced and Bassette is still young and learning.
So, whilst it’s not a case of going out and signing anyone, if a clear upgrade becomes available, it’s something that Coventry should pursue.
And, it’s fair to say that Chelsea striker Marc Guiu would fall into that category, with the 19-year-old believed to be a target for Ipswich Town.
The Spain youth international scored on his debut for Barcelona, has found the net in the Champions League for the Catalan giants, and scored six in nine for Chelsea as they won the Conference League.
That shows the pedigree of Guiu, and anyone who has seen him play will recognise his quality.
He is a typical striker in how he looks to play on the last man, he will run in behind, and he has a great ability to find space in the box.
You can see why Ipswich want Guiu, and there would be an expectation that he could flourish in a side that will create chances and look to dominate in the Championship.
But, Coventry have the same aims. After that play-off near miss, the objective will be to win promotion, and Lampard has built a team that plays stylish, attacking football.
Normally, it would be difficult for Coventry to get a player ahead of Ipswich, with the Tractor Boys boasting superior resources from their time in the Premier League last season.
However, the Lampard factor could sway things for Coventry.
Of course, the Londoners aren’t just going to do him a favour because he is a legend at the club, but Lampard having connections at Stamford Bridge will undoubtedly help.
Plus, he can point to the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount, who he developed during his time in charge of Derby, with the pair going on to command big fees for Chelsea further down the line, whilst Mount helped them to the Champions League.
Now, it’s down to Lampard to try and use that connection in Coventry’s favour, and if he could bring Guiu to the CBS Arena it would be a statement signing - and it could potentially ensure they go one better in their quest for promotion this season.
