According to Sunderland Echo, a free fan zone will take over Keel Square as England face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. It comes as the national team’s bid to end a 60-year wait for the trophy continues.
Kick-off is at eight pm BST in Atlanta. Pre-match build-up starts from seven pm and fans are encouraged to arrive early.
Seating is limited, and food and refreshments can be bought from surrounding businesses. The Wednesday forecast points to highs of 19 degrees, sunny intervals and a light breeze.
Councillor Chris Eynon, the Sunderland City Council leader, said the city is pleased to bring people together in Keel Square for what promises to be an exciting occasion. He hopes supporters of all ages enjoy another memorable evening in the centre.
Other big fan zones include Stack Seaburn, The Saltgrass in Deptford and The Fire Station. The latter is already sold out for Wednesday.
It is set to be a busy night across the city, with most large pubs showing England’s game. Sharon Appleby from Sunderland BIDs, which incorporates the city centre and the seafront, said events like this lift morale and provide a welcome boost for local businesses.
