SC Freiburg lost their first-ever European final as Aston Villa lifted the 2025/26 Europa League with a 3-0 victory. First-half goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendía set the tone for Unai Emery’s fifth triumph in the competition before Morgan Rogers puts the cherry on top after the break. Meanwhile, Freiburg’s search for a first major trophy will continue as they’ll compete in the Conference League next season.

Against all odds, the game had an end-to-end start. Igor Matanović had an off-target header in the first minute before Villa created some dangerous moments at the other end. Rogers forced Noah Atubolu’s first save with his customary shooting technique.

The highly-rated English international also had the next decent chance in the tenth minute when Freiburg’s goalkeeper was lucky it didn’t hit the target this time. Philip Treu’s early booking for pulling John McGinn’s shirt added more unnecessary pressure for the Germans.

In the fifteenth minute, it’s Buendía’s turn to be cautioned as Nicolas Höfler’s effort from the resulting set-piece delivery missed the target. Five minutes later, Matthy Cash became the third player to receive a yellow card as the game had now become more physical and tactical.

Freiburg’s first shot on target was registered in the 33rd minute with a tame effort by Johan Manzambi from distance. However, they also restricted their opponents to half-chances as shown by decent back-to-back blocks to thwart Buendía and McGinn.

The ever-lively Manzambi also tried to create a decent opportunity for his teammates with a dangerous cutback from the left wing, but no one was there to take advantage of it. Moments later, Villa broke the deadlock with a superb corner-kick routine.

Tielemans gave Atubolu no chance with an incredible first-time hit after Rogers delivered the cross. While Freiburg were invested in defending the small box, the unmarked Belgian midfielder punished them with a sucker punch.

After their goal in the 41st minute, the Premier League side completely dominated the rest of the half. And, with the last kick of the game, Buendía doubled their advantage with another cracking strike. The former Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder curled home from the outside of the box.

The two late goals completely changed the complexion of the game. Villa were more composed after the restart, and they sealed the victory just before the hour mark. This time, it was a close-range finish from Rogers after Buendía’s incisive passing.

Substitute Amadou Onana hit the post with a header twenty minutes before time as Freiburg continued to struggle in a drab second-half performance. Buendía also came close to scoring his second goal following a well-worked move before Atubolu denied the captain, McGinn. On a quiet night for Emiliano Martínez, his only second-half intervention to deny Manzambi was pointless as the Swiss international was in an offside position.

Aston Villa beat German teams in both of their European final victories. 44 years after the narrow win over Bayern in the European Cup final, Emery’s team brought home the club’s second European silverware. For Freiburg, it’s another final heartbreak four years after the DFB-Pokal defeat on a penalty shootout to RB Leipzig.
