SC Freiburg travel to Istanbul for the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night, standing on the precipice of absolute sporting immortality.
Julian Schuster’s team are competing in the first major European showpiece in the club’s 122-year history. The Black Forest outfit finished seventh in the Bundesliga, but their explosive European performances have captivated fans across Germany.
Freiburg have netted a staggering 25 goals in the competition this term. They aim to cap off a truly remarkable underdog story by upsetting Unai Emery’s heavily favoured English opponents.
Julian Schuster must adjust his attacking lineup following a severe blow to forward Yuito Suzuki. The Japanese attacker was ruled out of the trip to Turkey after suffering a painful collarbone fracture last week.
Aside from his absence, the German side possess a remarkably fully fit squad following superb work from their medical department. Midfielder Patrick Osterhage faces a late fitness check on a muscle strain, but he is expected to make the matchday squad.
At 41 years old, Schuster will become the youngest German manager to coach a major European final since Matthias Sammer in 2002. He will lean heavily on veteran defender Matthias Ginter, who has played every single minute of their knockout campaign. Midfield general Nicolas Höfler will start alongside captain Maximilian Eggestein to protect the backline.
Rising star Johan Manzambi will anchor the creative engine room alongside top scorer Vincenzo Grifo. Manzambi leads the tournament in duels won with 97, possession won with 72, and fouls won with 37.
Grifo enters the final in red-hot form, having produced nine direct goal involvements across his last five European appearances. Croatian striker Igor Matanović will lead the line, looking to breach a highly disciplined away defence.
Freiburg predicted XI: Atubolu; Kübler, Ginter, Lienhart, Treu; Eggestein, Manzambi; Beste, Höler, Grifo; Matanović.
The UEFA Europa League final at the Tüpraş Stadyumu kicks off at 20:00 BST on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
UK television viewers can watch the entire final live on TNT Sports 1. Live streaming is also available via the Sky Go app.
