Wolves are preparing for life back in the Championship after an embarrassing season in the Premier League.

Relegation had been inevitable for months before it was confirmed in April, so attention has been on the 2026/27 campaign for some time.

Clearly, major work is required to rebuild the squad, so a high turnover of players expected at Molineux over the next few months, with some big sales also on the cards.

Wolves in discussions to sign Kieran Trippier as he prepares to leave Newcastle United

In terms of incomings, Wolves are lacking players with the know-how of English football, which is something that Rob Edwards will be looking to address in the transfer window.

A potential return to the Black Country has been suggested for Raul Jimenez, and another experienced figure seemingly on their radar is Kieran Trippier.

That’s after the Express & Star revealed that Wolves have entered talks with the right-back over a move this summer, with the 35-year-old set to leave Newcastle when his contract expires this summer, with his last game coming against Fulham this weekend.

However, any move won’t be straightforward, as the update does confirm there is rival interest in the ex-Atletico Madrid man.

Bringing in a right-back is certain to be a priority for Wolves, as it has been something of a problem position for them this season.

Jackson Tchatchoua has endured a very difficult first season in English football, whilst there are doubts about Pedro Lima’s suitability for a 46-game Championship season, so a new signing in that area is expected.

Kieran Trippier would contribute to Wolves on and off the pitch

Given his age, it’s fair to say that Trippier’s best days are behind him, but he should still be able to do a very good job in the Championship.

Trippier has won over 50 caps for England, he has hundreds of appearances in the Premier League, and he has adapted his game to be able to defend strongly in recent years. Plus, he always offers a major threat from set-plays with his quality on the ball.

Crucially, he is also a real leader, and, from the outside, that appears to be something that Wolves are lacking right now.

There will be huge pressure on Wanderers next season, and there needs to be strong characters in the dressing room to be able to cope with that. Clearly, with Trippier’s CV, and the fact he was captain at Newcastle, he could quickly become an influential figure in the dressing room.

So, this would be an outstanding bit of business for Wolves if they could get this over the line, and Trippier could be the perfect player for someone like Lima to learn from as the young Brazilian looks to fulfil his potential over the coming years.

Next season will be about winning promotion, so Wolves need some signings for the here-and-now, and Trippier would be a major improvement on what they have.

There is also a spotlight on new chairman Nathan Shi and sporting director Matt Jackson, and this is the sort of addition that would help fans believe that the club are heading in the right direction after years of mismanagement.
