From Rabiot-Rowe to Aubameyang’s extinguisher row, Marseille’s season of player sanctions | OneFootball

Marseille’s campaign has been punctuated by disciplinary drops, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the latest after a Thursday night incident. L'Équipe reports that several team-mates have been sidelined at different points in a fraught season.

After a 0-1 defeat at Rennes to start the league, Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe fought in the dressing room. Rabiot apologised to Pablo Longoria and Medhi Benatia yet was dropped three days later, with staff citing extreme violence disputed by some witnesses. He later signed for AC Milan, Rowe for Bologna.

Ruben Blanco, Pol Lirola, Ulisses Garcia and Neal Maupay stayed despite summer exit pushes, and were kept apart from the group. Blanco trained alone with a goalkeeping coach, while Garcia and Maupay were left off the Champions League list before Garcia’s reinstatement after Facundo Medina’s long-term injury. All departed in winter.

Amir Murillo’s perceived nonchalance, including his role in Paris-SG’s stoppage-time equaliser in the Trophée des Champions, angered Roberto De Zerbi after a 2-2 with Paris FC. He was ejected from a tense training session, then sent to the reserves. Four days later the Panama international joined Besiktas in Türkiye.

Habib Beye said there was no rift, yet Himad Abdelli was sidelined for a week to train alone after answering back following the 1-1 with Nice. He was omitted at Nantes last week, then returned to group training this week.

Back from Saudi Arabia last summer after 2023-24, Aubameyang resumed a leadership role but tired of the mood at La Commanderie. On Thursday he led a party to mark the end of a disciplinary lock-in imposed by Medhi Benatia, which spiralled and saw sporting coordinator Bob Tahri sprayed with a fire extinguisher. Despite apologising on Friday, he was left out of Sunday’s trip to Le Havre.
