The Spygate wait rolls on, with Football League World reporting Simon Jordan’s view that any ban could be lighter than feared. The FA has yet to conclude its process and Southampton continue to back their head coach.

Ben Brereton Díaz has been reintegrated after his Derby loan, and Eckert told the Daily Echo he is very happy with the forward and how he has integrated back into the group. He played throughout pre-season, yet a move still looks likely, with Derby and Sheffield United linked.

Attention turns to the Carabao Cup, where Saints visit Colchester United in round one. The allocation is sold out, kick-off is 5.30pm on Saturday the 8th August, live on Sky Sports Football. Assistant Ben Garner returns to a club he previously managed, while Eckert awaits clarity on touchline access.

Fulham have had a £24m offer for Shea Charles rejected, with Southampton holding out for north of £30m. Leeds remain in the race and their latest, labelled a final offer, is again short. Charles is contracted to 2027 with a club option for a further year, and his preference is said to be Leeds, though Saints look prepared to let bidding decide.

Southampton have identified Crystal Palace midfielder Justin Devenny as cover should Charles depart. Middlesbrough have joined the chase and are ready to push to around £7m, with Leicester City also in the mix. With three clubs circling and none matching the price, a minus-four-point start strengthens the case to sell at the club’s valuation.
