Match preview ahead of the game away to 1. FC Union Berlin

Just three games remain on the agenda until the 2024/25 reaches its conclusion. On Saturday, 03.05.2025, head coach Ole Werner’s SV Werder side travel to face 1. FC Union Berlin (kick-off 15:30 CEST). The Green-Whites have nothing to lose but plenty to gain thanks to their promising outlook with regard to the standings. They head to the German capital brimming with pride concerning their performance to date and with no fear as they look to climb even higher.

Team news: Marco Friedl and Felix Agu both took a break from training at the start of the week but have since been able to return. André Silva has only been able to complete parts of team training of late. Milos Veljkovic remains absent as a result of muscle problems.

Ole Werner on the opponent: “Their style of play makes it very difficult for you to score past them. It could therefore be a similar game to Bochum and St. Pauli. Our performance against Bochum in particular can be a good benchmark. Two teams are facing each other who have been very defensively solid recently. They have rediscovered their strengths of defending deep and counterattacking, so we’ll have to remain patient, not play into their hands and find ways of breaking through an opponent who sits deep. Set pieces could be an important avenue for us too.”

The weekend’s clash will be the 11th in competitive competition between these two clubs. The Berliners have won six of the previous meetings, while SVW have defeated these opponents on four occasions. Werner’s team ran out 4-1 winners in the reverse fixture, with Marco Grüll bagging a brace.

Penalty-saving specialist: Union keeper Frederik Rönnow boasts a particularly impressive save rate when it comes to opposition spot kicks. The Dane has kept out four of the five penalties he has faced in the German top-flight this term, with no other Bundesliga stopper preventing more.
