Gabriel Brazão has had his punishment converted to a warning by the STJD Pleno. The decision follows his criticism of referee Raphael Claus over a yellow card in the 2 May derby with Palmeiras in the 14th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, and it leaves him free to play for Santos.

According to Globo.com, the goalkeeper was charged under CBJD article 243-F for offending someone’s honour. The 3rd Disciplinary Commission initially banned him for four matches before Santos lodged an appeal.

Post-match, Brazão said he disagreed with the booking and insisted he is not a time-wasting keeper. He pointed out that Flaco López was inside the area as he went to release the ball, then complained that Claus was overly strict. He also suggested that, at Palmeiras’ home, marginal calls tend to favour the hosts.

At Wednesday’s Pleno hearing, relator Marco Aurélio Choy judged the remarks to be careful and partly self-critical regarding the yellow card, not imputing dishonourable conduct to the referee. He voted to acquit the Santos player without reclassifying the conduct.

Auditor Rodrigo Aiache agreed that article 243-F did not apply, but reclassified the case under article 258, paragraph 2, item two, for disrespecting the refereeing team, imposing a one match suspension converted into a warning.
