Gabriel Mec was the standout change as Grêmio opened their Copa do Brasil campaign with a 2-0 win over Confiança, the 18-year-old leaving to applause and strengthening his case for more minutes.

According to Globo.com, Mec started centrally as a number 10 ahead of a double pivot and was repeatedly targeted, drawing three fouls.

He also supplied the cross from the right that led to Braithwaite’s effort, finished by Carlos Vinicius.

Post-match, Mec thanked the supporters, said criticism can be constructive, and believes the squad are working daily to improve and return to winning most games. He added he is comfortable inside or wide, and will keep giving his all when selected.

Luís Castro praised his display, saying the 18-year-old is progressing this year. The coach stressed Mec’s rise is part of a wider growth process and a reward for daily work, not a sudden change. He had also started against Deportivo Riestra a week earlier, then was withdrawn at half-time.

Key numbers versus Confiança: 3 shots, 19 passes with 17 completed, 4 tackles, and 3 fouls won.
