Ipswich Town have appointed former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil as their new manager on a three-year contract to summer 2029, as they prepare for a Premier League return.

O’Neil told the club’s official website: "It is an honour to be appointed manager of this great football club. I have followed the progress the club has made over the last few years closely and to now have the opportunity to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited by."

He arrives from Strasbourg, having taken the French side to the semi-finals of the Conference League and the Coupe de France.

His first season at Wolves ended 14th in the Premier League, with notable wins over Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham, and a run to the FA Cup quarter-finals. A late collapse at home to then Championship Coventry would deny a Wembley trip and, despite a long-term deal, would prove the start of his decline.

He later departed with Wolves 19th, four points behind fourth-bottom Crystal Palace, after a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich that marked a fourth straight league loss and an 11th in 16.

O’Neil replaces Kieran McKenna, who stepped down earlier this month after five years. McKenna had delivered automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of last season, 12 months after their relegation.

He will be assisted by Tim Jenkins, Neil Critchley and Ed Ames, who join his backroom staff after working with him in France.
