Gary Rowett says the missing full picture might explain Harry Winks’ frustration, but it does not justify his response to supporters after Leicester City’s defeat at Portsmouth.

According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Winks was filmed swearing at fans as he boarded the team bus following the 1-0 loss at Fratton Park on Saturday.

The incident prompted a fierce backlash during the 2-2 draw with Hull, when City were relegated to League One. Dropped from the starting line-up, he was booed and targeted as he ran the touchline in the first half.

The jeers continued in the half-time warm-up and again when he came on. Rowett accepted Winks should not have reacted, but said a recording of the full exchange would offer context and urged people to consider what happened moments earlier, before adding the matter is now irrelevant.

Winks was a key figure under Enzo Maresca, but has since endured a turbulent spell, left out by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Marti Cifuentes. He has one year left on his deal after a 12-month extension clause triggered by promotion in 2024. It is very likely he will be sold, with wages around half of the £90,000 a week figure circulated online and set to fall again after relegation, yet he would still be among the top earners and, with a reduced budget, he will have to depart.
