Gateshead manager Rob Elliot has hailed Sunderland forward Ethan Moore’s impact on loan and says he would like to turn the move into a permanent deal.

Moore, 21, returned in August after over two years out with a serious knee injury, appearing for Sunderland Under-21s in a 3-2 defeat to Southampton before a February loan for the rest of the season.

He debuted in a 1-0 loss at Boston United. After a 2-1 defeat to Brackley Town left the Heed bottom and 11 points adrift, a run of two losses in 14 lifted them eight clear. Safety needs two points from three.

“Ethan has been absolutely superb and we know he’s had a really difficult time with injuries. He didn’t really play a lot of football before he came into Gateshead,” said Elliot, speaking to Sunderland Echo.

All nine outings have been as a substitute, including an influential Bank Holiday that brought four points at Carlisle United and against Scunthorpe United. He hopes for a first start across trips to Aldershot Town and Altrincham and a home game with Jermain Defoe’s Woking.

“I like that desire to do well and we are hoping to get him signed up and sealed for the future because he’s someone that is a pleasure to coach and there is so much potential there.”
