Gennaro Gattuso has accepted the Lazio job and, by his own admission, knows the scale of the task ahead. Il Messaggero reports that he is braced for tight finances, a modest squad, possible exits and supporter unrest.

Lazio have agreed terms with Maurizio Sarri to end his contract, and once official the 67-year-old will be free to join Atalanta, with Gattuso lined up as replacement. He already has an agreement with Claudio Lotito on a two-year deal worth 1.5 million per season.

“I’m fired up, I know all the difficulties I’ll face, but I’m not afraid of anything or anyone.”

He plans to retain the backroom team from recent years, led by long-time assistant Luigi Riccio, who has worked with him since Sion in 2013. Fitness coach Bruno Giovanni Dominici, along with Dino Tenderini, will take similar roles. Roberto Perrone will be goalkeeping coach and Marco Sangermani the match analyst.

Players are due at Formello by 10 July for medicals, with pre-season beginning on 13 July.
