Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has made a bold Kaizer Chiefs claim after eliminating the Soweto giants from the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday.
The Cape Winelands outfit secured a 2-1 victory in the Round of 32 at DHL Stadium, thanks to first half goals from Ibraheem Jabaar and Devin Titus, while Flavio Da Silva netted for Amakhosi.
Reflecting on the match, Hunt, who took over in December 2025, believes his side deserved the goals that sent the defending champions packing from the Ke Yona Cup in the first round.
“I thought it was a proper cup tie, end-to-end stuff. I thought we well deserved the first two goals. We were out of sight and then they got back into the game a little bit and they had one or two chances, we also had one or two chances in the second half as well,” he said.
"They got the goal and we should have made it 3-1 there, I thought that was the best chance of the game. But our keeper made some saves that's his job and their keeper made some saves. So, it was a helluva cup tie I thought, on a very difficult pitch and you have to see it out and we did that.
Prior to the clash, Chiefs had won four of the last five meetings between the two teams, establishing themselves as a hoodoo team to Stellenbosch, which sparked a rivalry.
Now, the Stellies mentor shrugged off claims that the win will be a confidence boost when the two sides square off again, claiming Chiefs have enough arsenal to even win the Betway Premiership.
“I don't believe in confidence, I think it's a myth because confidence can go very quickly as well. We play Chiefs in two or three weeks' time again, so they'll certainly want to get one over us,” Hunt added.
