AC Milan made a very slow start to the summer transfer window but the deals soon started getting done and Paulo Fonseca is armed with four players right now that can immediately help the first team.

As highlighted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, there are different thought processes behind each of the four new signings and all of them will bring something different to Fonseca’s side that was lacking last season.

A criticism of the draw against Torino was that Milan felt too similar to last season, but Fonseca only had two of the four available and even then, Morata was not fully fit and Pavlovic was not selected to start.

Alvaro Morata

It almost goes without saying what Morata will bring, although he is now injured until after the international break in September.

The Spaniard is an established Serie A and Champions League striker who suits Fonseca’s way of playing. He instantly made the team better when he came on against Torino.

Emerson Royal

Davide Calabria failed to impress against Torino and whilst it is a very small sample size, it suggests that he is not going to improve from last season.

He is still the captain of the team and a real leader, but Emerson Royal provides another option who is better in the attacking phase than Calabria. There could come a delicate moment where Calabria is replaced by Emerson as the starting right-back.

Strahinja Pavlovic

The Serbian is expected to make his starting debut against Parma on Saturday with Malick Thiaw struggling against Torino.

His immense height and strength are useful, but he is not a static defender. Patience will need to be shown when it comes to him helping build attacks for Milan, but that spot alongside Fikayo Tomori is there to be won and it might not take much.

Youssouf Fofana

The most recent signing is Youssouf Fofana and the French midfielder seemed to be the player that the club hierarchy wanted most.

Fofana is very adept at breaking up the attacks of his opponents but he can also help Milan build there own attacks. There was a clear lack of balance in midfield against Torino but the expectation is that once Fofana is fit enough to start, he will make multiple components of the team perform better.
