Luka Vušković has enjoyed the breakout season of all breakout seasons whilst on loan at Hamburg from Tottenham Hotspur. The 19-year-old pushed for the move to Merlin Polzin’s newly promoted Rothosen last summer, keen to showcase his talents at the highest level – something not promised had he remained in N17 for the season.

After a disappointing opening couple of games for Hamburg upon their Bundesliga return, Polzin quickly threw the Croatian into the thick of things after the first international break of the season. Making his debut at the Allianz Arena, Vušković couldn’t have suffered a more difficult start as Hamburg succumbed to a 5-0 defeat. However, he quickly steadied things the week after, and by scoring HSV’s first Bundesliga goal in over seven years, he kickstarted his team’s season with a 2-1 win over Heidenheim. From that point on, Vušković played every Bundesliga minute for Polzin until injury ruled him out for a run of games in April.

Near unbeatable in the air, Vušković broke the Bundesliga record for aerial duels won in a single match with 18 away to Union Berlin, securing a valuable point early in the season. Not only is Vušković already a leader at the back, but he also finished the season as Hamburg’s second top scorer in the Bundesliga – behind fellow North London loanee Fabio Vieira. The pick of the bunch being a stunning scorpion kick against great rivals Werder Bremen, a goal which would secure the 2025 Bundesliga goal of the year.

After arriving in the Hanseatic city with the reputation of a promising up-and-coming defender, Vušković ends the season as one of the most highly regarded defenders in Europe. Despite being outspoken about his desire to remain in Hamburg for another year in order to play with his brother Mario, where Luka is playing his football come next season is anyone’s guess.
