Ghana secured a dramatic 1–0 victory over Panama in their World Cup Group L opener thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi's stoppage-time finish at 90+5'. Substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante provided the assist after beating José Córdoba for pace, ending a tense encounter that Panama had controlled for long spells. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Ghana v Panama.

Winners

Caleb Yirenkyi (Ghana)

Caleb Yirenkyi delivered the decisive moment Ghana desperately needed, converting Brandon Thomas-Asante's cross from close range in the 90+5' minute. His composed right-footed finish inside the small area proved the difference in a tight World Cup opener that had looked destined for a goalless stalemate until the final seconds.

The midfielder showed mixed fortune in front of goal throughout, sending a shot high over the bar from inside the box at 50' after beating Andrés Andrade. He had also received a yellow card in the 16th minute for a tactical foul to halt Yoel Bárcenas' counter-attack, demonstrating his willingness to do what was necessary.

When the moment mattered most, Yirenkyi was positioned perfectly. His goal ended Ghana's seven-match winless run stretching back to October 2025 and handed Carlos Queiroz's side three vital points in Group L, where England had earlier defeated Croatia 4–2. Redemption came at the perfect time for a player who had earlier wasted a chance.

Brandon Thomas-Asante (Ghana)

Brandon Thomas-Asante proved the ultimate game-changer after entering as a 58th-minute substitute. His pace and direct running transformed Ghana's attack, and he delivered the crucial assist by beating José Córdoba down the left channel before providing the ball that led to Caleb Yirenkyi's match-winning finish.

Throughout his time on the pitch, Thomas-Asante consistently threatened Panama's defence with his willingness to attack space. He earlier forced Orlando Mosquera into a brilliant save with a curled effort after racing through on goal, though that chance was subsequently ruled offside. His movement created openings Ghana had lacked.

Carlos Queiroz's decision to introduce Thomas-Asante alongside Issahaku Fatawu at 58' proved inspired. While Ghana had managed just one shot in the entire first half, the substitutes injected urgency and directness that eventually unpicked Panama's defensive organisation. Thomas-Asante's burst of acceleration in stoppage time was the moment that decided the match.

Loser

José Córdoba (Panama)

José Córdoba anchored Panama's defence competently for 94 minutes, but his critical lapse in stoppage time proved costly. He was beaten for pace by Brandon Thomas-Asante down the left channel, allowing the substitute to burst into the area and deliver the cross that led to Ghana's winning goal.

Throughout the match, Córdoba had been involved in Panama's patient build-up from the back and helped organise the backline. He made clearances and contributed to a defensive structure that had frustrated Ghana's attackers for almost the entire 90 minutes, giving no indication of the decisive error to come.

Panama had been the better side for long spells, controlling possession and creating early chances through Cecilio Waterman and César Blackman. Yet Córdoba's inability to contain Thomas-Asante at the decisive moment meant all that dominance counted for nothing. Panama's wait for a first World Cup victory continues after three defeats in 2018 and now this heartbreak.
