Paris Saint-Germain’s latest transfer activity should give Manchester United hope in their bid to strengthen a key area of weakness.
Following the Benjamin Sesko swoop, United now have the goalkeeping department as one other position to bolster.
INEOS are expected to recruit a reliable keeper to offer Andre Onana the much-needed competition between the sticks.
Europe’s finest goalkeepers have been linked, one of them being Gianluigi Donnarumma, who not long ago helped PSG lift the UEFA Champions League.
At 26, Donnarumma’s brilliance at Parc des Princes should have cemented him as PSG’s number one for at least the next decade.
However, his decision to snub a contract extension, with his deal expiring next summer, has seen his assured position under Luis Enrique come under threat.
The French giants have now signed LOSC Lille’s goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Chevalier has slowly but surely established himself as one of the best keepers in Europe and is expected to become PSG’s new number one.
That would leave Donnarumma as his deputy but only if he stays, as the latest developments suggest he is unlikely to remain at PSG next season.
Reports claim the French champions are no longer keen to extend his contract.
They are willing to let him leave as a free agent next summer, unless they receive at least £25 million from interested suitors before the transfer deadline.
While that is a clear signal for Donnarumma’s admirers to strike, they may be further encouraged by fresh developments out of Spain.
According to Fichajes, PSG are working on yet another goalkeeping signing.
They claim:
“From Paris, PSG have shown a firm interest in acquiring the services of the German international [Marc-Andre ter Stegen]. The team led by Luis Enrique, current Champions League champions, is looking to strengthen its goalkeeping with a proven profile, and the name of Ter Stegen fits perfectly into the Asturian coach’s plans.”
Ter Stegen finds himself in a similar position to Donnarumma, his starting spot under threat.
Barcelona, having signed top prospect John Garcia from Valencia, are ready to move on the 33 year old and get his wages off their books.
While the German keeper is said to want to stay at Camp Nou, PSG’s interest could prompt him to reconsider.
Whether Ter Stegen moves to Paris or not, the fact that he is being chased should leave Donnarumma questioning whether he is still wanted.
Some would argue he is not, and if he and his camp feel the same, a push for an exit could follow.
It is a transfer opportunity that United should be ready to pounce on.
