San Mamés is one of the most demanding stadiums in La Liga, and Girona managed to secure a very commendable draw (1-1) that feels like a small victory. Míchel's team, staying true to their style, delivered an excellent first half, with moments of dominance that unsettled Athletic Club. The reward came early: in the 9th minute, Azzedine Ounahi finished off a great collective move with an unstoppable shot into the top corner that silenced "The Cathedral." The Moroccan midfielder was the standout player of the first half, orchestrating the game and creating advantages that allowed Girona to come close to scoring a second goal.

The red-and-whites, who debuted a 4-4-2 formation today with Vanat and Van de Beek leading the press, could have gone into halftime with a greater advantage. Vanat had a great chance with a lobbed shot that went just wide (8’), and Van de Beek attempted a long-range volley that went over the bar. Unfortunately, the Dutch midfielder had to leave the field due to injury, undoubtedly the worst news of the afternoon.

The start of the second half was a tough blow: in the 48th minute, a loss of possession during the buildup allowed Jaureguizar to equalize with a precise shot to the far post that Gazzaniga couldn’t stop. From that moment on, the game shifted, and Athletic increased the pressure. Valverde's team besieged the visitors' area, but Girona managed to endure and hold on.

When the team seemed most overwhelmed, Gazzaniga stepped up to keep them in the game. First, with a crucial save at point-blank range after a header from Paredes (70’), and shortly after, by winning a one-on-one against Berenguer (74’). These interventions kept Girona alive until the final whistle.

The final minutes were all about resilience and professionalism. Ounahi continued to be the team's beacon, holding onto the ball, drawing fouls, and giving his teammates some breathing room. The hard-fought and well-earned point is Girona's second in this league - both away from home - and leaves the impression that the team is on the right track.

Now, Montilivi awaits. On Friday against Espanyol, Míchel's team will have the chance to build on this draw and gift the fans their first victory.
