Werder Bremen injected life into their Bundesliga campaign this afternoon with a resounding victory over a hapless Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 4-0 win, inspired by Samuel Mbangula, marks the first time Bremen have defeated Die Fohlen at Borussia-Park in 15 years.

An early penalty appeal fell the way of Gladbach as Kevin Diks thought his shot struck Coulibaly's arm but replays showed otherwise. Shortly after Machino went close, Bremen went in front - Samuel Mbangula drifted infield and unleashed a rocket went in off the post catching Moritz Nicolas off guard.

Cameron Puertas' shot marked a sign of clear intent from Bremen, while their goalkeeper Mio Backhaus got a vital touch to deflect a cross away from Robin Hack. Then the visitors nudged 2-0 ahead on 26 minutes - Mbangula turned provider this time to feed Jens Stage in the box to blast it inside the left post.

Hack was by far Gladbach's most dangerous asset and the German winger had two fine opportunities provided to him by Reyna and Honorat - neither of which he could take. A chorus of disgruntled boos rang out around the Borussia-Park terraces as the half-time whistle sounded.

Bremen kept pushing forward after the break and narrowly missed out on adding a third goal on 57 minutes as Sugawara tried his luck from range which almost paid off. Grüll struck the crossbar before Gladbach's afternoon was summed up when Rocco Reitz's header was cleared off the line by Felix Agu.

Horst Steffen's first victory was all but secured beyond the 74th-minute. Mbangula continued to cause havoc and drew the foul from Diks in the box which resulted in a penalty swept home by Romano Schmid. Late substitute Boniface played his part in making it 4-0 as he fed Njinmah who curled home with the outside of his right boot.
