Everton academy product Harry Tyrer is reportedly closing in on a permanent move to Cardiff City, with the 24-year-old goalkeeper expected to complete the transfer in the coming days.

The Crosby-born shot-stopper has been a fixture of the Blues' youth setup for over 15 years, but with a clear path to the first team blocked by the likes of Jordan Pickford and João Virgínia, Tyrer is set to pursue a fresh start in South Wales.

Despite Cardiff currently operating under a transfer embargo, the Bluebirds are confident that administrative issues regarding their accounts will be resolved by the end of the week, allowing them to register Tyrer as their first signing of the January window.

Tyrer joined Everton’s academy at the age of 7 and rose steadily through the ranks. He became a mainstay for the Under-18s during the 2018-19 season, notably helping the team reach the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

His professional development was accelerated by a string of successful loan spells. He earned rave reviews during a 55-appearance stint at Chester in 2022-23, followed by a title-winning campaign with Chesterfield in 2023-24, where he played 42 times as the Spireites secured promotion back to the EFL. Most recently, Tyrer spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Blackpool, making 38 appearances in League One.

While Tyrer never made a competitive first-team appearance for Everton, he has been a frequent presence in matchday squads under various managers, including Carlo Ancelotti and David Moyes.

In total, Tyrer has been named as a substitute for the senior team 10 times in competitive fixtures:

He also featured for the first team in several pre-season friendlies, most notably keeping a clean sheet in a 2020 victory over Preston North End at Goodison Park.

With his contract currently set to expire in June 2026, the move represents a logical step for both parties. Everton will secure a fee for an academy graduate, while Tyrer gains the opportunity to compete for the No 1 spot at a Cardiff side looking to bounce back up to the Championship.

Played a full season for Blackpool in League One and did respectably.

I hope he goes off to have a decent career playing rather than propping up a bench.

A good goalkeeper and a good Evertonian. I think he might have saved more penalties during his time in the Academy teams than Pickford has for Everton.

Good luck, Harry, you never got a chance at Everton. How many games have you played in the last few few months at Everton? I think Cardiff have got a genuine bargain.

Probably better than Traversty and King

Typical Everton -- letting the wrong players go!

I thought he was getting praise from wherever he was loaned out but no place for him at Everton.

It seems we prefer more senior players from other teams' reserves.

Rhian Brewster immediately springs to mind.

Didn't know that Harry was from Crosby. Even more reason to wish him well and I for one will not be surprised if he carves out a good career.
