Government awards Order of Civil Merit honour to Spain’s men’s and women’s teams | OneFootball

Spain’s Council of Ministers on Tuesday approved the plaque of honour of the Order of Civil Merit for the men’s and women’s national football teams, following the men’s second world title secured on Sunday.

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in New York, with Ferrán Torres scoring the winner at the World Cup staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz announced the decision.

The award was adopted through the Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, and proposed by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Milagros Tolón. Saiz described it as recognition of an achievement that goes beyond sport and reflects perseverance, effort, sacrifice, teamwork, respect, tolerance and talent.

She said Spain had made history again, becoming the only country whose men’s and women’s teams have both won the World Cup, noting the women’s 2023 triumph over England in Sydney.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting, alongside a poster reading “Valores de España”, Saiz hailed Sunday’s “brilliant” victory and pointed to the welcome in Madrid, as well as support from those following at home.

She added that the team had exemplified talent, camaraderie and solidarity throughout the tournament, a way of competing that speaks to the country’s values. Saiz thanked the players for making Spain dream again and offered her congratulations to the champions.
