Granit Xhaka has confirmed he will remain at Sunderland next season, ending Chelsea’s pursuit of the midfielder.
"Sunderland has been my home since day one. We are all very happy. I decided to stay where I am; family is the most important thing. I am ready to make history with them," he said, speaking to DAZN after Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties.
Chelsea had an initial offer of eight million pounds turned down earlier this summer and Sunderland made clear they did not want to sell. Xhaka had considered a reunion with his former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, but he reaffirmed his commitment late last week after talks with the club hierarchy.
He informed Alonso of his decision over the weekend. Sunderland then hinted at the outcome with a playful post referencing the ‘We’ve got Granit Xhaka’ song, which the player shared on his own channels.
Switzerland’s victory secured a first World Cup quarter-final since 1954, with Argentina to come in the early hours of Monday for a place in the last four.
"It’s incredible. We know what the World Cup means. We created this opportunity for ourselves. Many teams have lost on penalties. Today is a special day for all of us, it hasn't really sunk in yet. I keep getting better as time goes on. I have a wealth of experience—with my teammates, my coaches, and the support of my loved ones. All of that makes me happy."
