Granit Xhaka voiced his frustration after Sunderland were held by Wolves, a result that checked their European push.

The player said in a post on Instagram shortly after the final whistle at Molineux, "Properly frustrated after that one. Still nine points to play for, so let’s finish the season strong."

Sunderland led through Nordi Mukiele and were in control until Dan Ballard was dismissed midway through the first half. Régis Le Bris’ side then had to defend for long spells, and Wolves levelled from a corner, continuing a run of set-piece concessions.

Despite the dismissal, the visitors stayed organised and Xhaka was among those to press late on for a winner. The application offered encouragement, though the inability to close it out will grate.

The point leaves Sunderland 12th in the Premier League, four points off the European places with three matches remaining. Manchester United visit the Stadium of Light next Saturday at 15:00, then comes a trip to Everton on Sunday, May 17 at 15:00, before a final-day meeting with Chelsea.

Ballard is set to serve a three-match suspension for violent conduct after his red card, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.
