Granit Xhaka told Sunderland supporters the club are only at the start, delivering an emotional on-pitch address after the 2-1 win over Chelsea that secured seventh place on the Premier League’s final day.
As reported by Sunderland Echo, a capacity crowd stayed for a post-match lap of appreciation at the Stadium of Light. The victory clinched Europa League football.
Xhaka thanked the owner, Flo and the coach, then praised players, staff and supporters, saying such backing made the season possible. As captain, he promised this is just the beginning and said the team want more. He urged fans to enjoy the moment and said they would see them soon.
Head coach Régis Le Bris also addressed the crowd, thanking fans for their impressive support across the campaign and recalling last year’s trip to Wembley, calling 24 May a special date. He thanked the owners, the head of football and backroom staff, describing seventh as a massive achievement built on hard work. He told supporters to enjoy their summer and said they will need them again next season, aiming to be even better.
Supporters sang Xhaka’s name as he spoke on the pitch, rounding off celebrations on a landmark day for Sunderland.
