Granit Xhaka’s recent remarks on staying at Sunderland, made while away with Switzerland earlier this month, have taken on fresh weight after reports linked the captain with Chelsea.

Xhaka joined from Bayer Leverkusen last summer and is contracted until 2028. He captained Régis Le Bris’ side to Europa League qualification, finishing seventh as a newly promoted team.

“For me, the most important thing is that my family is happy. And we are in Sunderland. I’m not even thinking about a transfer. This allows me to fully focus on the World Cup.” He told Blick earlier this month.

“It’s a bit like home for me. The city feels like Basel.”

“To be honest, I’m not surprised. Throughout my career, I’ve always made all my decisions based on my gut feeling.”

Those remarks have resurfaced alongside the latest speculation.
