Manchester City are delighted to announce that Alex Greenwood has signed a contract extension until 2027.
The England international and Club captain has been a key figure since moving to the Joie Stadium in the summer of 2020 from French giants OL Lyonnes.
She’s gone on to feature 152 times for City, winning two major honours and appearing in the PFA WSL Team of the Year in three of her five full seasons in Blue.
In 2024, she also became only the second player in our professional history to be appointed captain following the retirement of Club legend Steph Houghton.
A two-time European Championship winner with over 100 England appearances to her name, Greenwood has become one of world football’s most consistent and dependable defenders during her time at City.
And she’s now agreed to commit her future to the Club with a fresh contract extension which will take her to seven years at the Joie Stadium.
Speaking about the extension, Alex said: “I’m really happy to stay here, it’s the club I love and the club I want to be successful at and I’m really happy to be here for another two more [years].”

“Personally, I have so much unfinished business to be done, and I love this football club. It feels like home to me now and I feel this is where I belong and am meant to be.”
Manchester City’s Director of Football Therese Sjogran added: “We’re absolutely delighted that Alex has signed a new deal with the Club.
“It’s difficult to put into words how important she is on and off the pitch, and I know my respect and admiration for her as a player and person is shared by everyone at City.
“We’re excited by the direction this team is going in this season and beyond, and Alex is central to those ambitions.”
Alex Greenwood is considered one of the finest defenders in world football, and she has the track record to prove it.
Across her five full seasons at City, she’s figured in three separate PFA WSL Team of the Year squads – an accolade voted for by her fellow professionals.
Indeed, the only two years when she hasn’t figured were in 2020/21, her first season when she predominantly played at left-back, and 2024/25, when she missed almost five months of the campaign through injury.

The Blues lost just once in her 19 appearances last season, and it’d have a happy ending for Greenwood as she went on to help England retain their European title that summer.
A defender with remarkable technical ability and a dangerous set-piece delivery, our captain has completed more successful passes and ball carries than any other player in the WSL since joining City, and only Arsenal’s Katie McCabe has created more chances among defenders.
But there’s always substance to the style when it comes to Greenwood.

City fans will recall a crunching tackle on Nikita Parris at Old Trafford and a physical mismatch when challenging for an aerial ball with Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas as just two examples of that dominance.
Those qualities are clearly being absorbed by her team-mates, too, and Alex can take credit for the way Jade Rose has flourished in her first professional season as well as the continued growth of homegrown talent Gracie Prior.
Kerstin Casparij, who’s worn the captain’s armband in the absence of Greenwood at times this season, is also perhaps enjoying her finest season to date.
She may go under the radar at times, but the respect and admiration Alex commands within the Club is immeasurable.
And if this City team, packed full of exciting young talent, are to deliver on the big stage, then Greenwood will have been a driving force behind that success.
