Alex Greenwood admits she's 'not getting ahead' of herself after booking an FA Cup semi-final spot

After booking our spot in the semi-finals of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup following a tough 1-0 win away to Birmingham City, Alex Greenwood refused to get carried away.

It’s been four years since we lifted silverware, so with City now being just five points away from a WSL title and one match away from a date at Wembley in the FA Cup, there was obvious delight across our skipper’s face.

Heading into the game, everyone watching on TNT Sports1 found out that whoever came out on top at Knightshead @ St. Andrew’s stadium would be rewarded with an away tie against Chelsea.

After a bright start that saw us run into an early lead through Bunny Shaw, the game was set up for Andrée Jeglertz’s side to dominate the ball, control the tempo and play the game how we wanted to.

So, while the Blues came and pushed on in the second half, Greenwood and the rest of her trusted defenders and Khiara Keating, were not truly troubled as the WSL2 side failed to register a shot on target in the game.

“We got the job done in the end, and that was the most important thing,” Greenwood said to TNT Sports moments after the full-time whistle.

“They made it really difficult for us today and posed a couple of threats to us. I wouldn’t say that we were at our best today, but that’s the FA Cup, and that’s the challenge of this cup, but we’re through to the semi-final.”

There is a lot of talk at the moment about City being close to getting their hands on some silverware; however, after admitting the whole team were not at their best, our captain refused to look too far ahead, she added.

“I love being part of this club; it’s a joy right now, and it’s great to be captain of this club.

“But I don’t get ahead of myself because I’ve been close in the past and it hasn’t happened, so this time I’m really focused on each game, and now we go into the international break, which is exciting. So, we’ll look after ourselves and then go again when we come back.”

Having not heard pre-match who our opponents would be if we successfully navigated past a tough Birmingham side, Greenwood found out post-match that it would be away to Chelsea.

While the news of another away FA Cup match, which will be our third of the competition, wasn’t greeted with too much delight, the captain acknowledged that you have to beat the best to win this cup.

It will also be our fourth meeting against Sonia Bompastor’s side, with the Blues having won twice: on the opening day of the season and in the semi-final of the Subway League Cup, while we recorded an emphatic 5-1 win at the Etihad the last time we met.

“Of course,” Greenwood said when told our opponents would be Chelsea. “Look, if you’re going to get to a final, then you’ve got to beat the best, and Chelsea are definitely one of them.”
