Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães stepped up in the 90th minute to snatch a dramatic 2–1 victory over Fulham at St James’ Park.

Jacob Murphy opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 18th minute, finishing sharply after dispossessing Calvin Bassey and drilling the ball home from the edge of the area.

The Magpies had started brightly, hitting the woodwork twice inside the opening six minutes and creating several promising chances through Kieran Trippier and Nick Woltemade.

The Cottagers responded in the second half, with Sasa Lukic heading in the equaliser in the 56th minute after a scramble in the Newcastle box. The goal was not without incident - both Lukic and Sven Botman were injured in the challenge, with Botman eventually replaced by Fabian Schär.

The hosts pushed for a winner throughout the second half. Guimarães headed over from a Anthony Gordon cross and saw another effort skim wide. Substitutes Anthony Elanga, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali all went close, while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno made several key saves to keep his side level.

In stoppage time, Newcastle finally broke through. Sub William Osula drove into the box and fired, Leno parried, and Guimarães was quickest to react, tapping home to send St James’ Park into raptures.

The win marks Newcastle’s third home league victory of the season and adds to their midweek Champions League triumph over Benfica. Fulham, meanwhile, have now lost four successive Premier League matches.
