Guinea is taking a major step forward in modernizing its football. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is expected to make its debut soon in the national championship. Indeed, sports authorities are ramping up their initiatives to prepare for its rollout.

VAR will soon be operational in Guinea’s national league. Officials are working at full speed to get the project up and running. In this context, the first training session dedicated to VAR usage was held in February 2026. According to information reported by La Première Africa, around thirty Guinean referees took part in this capacity-building program.

This training aims to familiarize officials with how the technology works, as well as the intervention protocols during contentious match decisions. The goal is to ensure effective and consistent use of VAR in national competitions.

Towards a modernized championship

Alongside referee training, Guinean football authorities are also working on setting up the technical equipment needed to operate the system. The technical gear will be gradually installed to ensure optimal use of the technology.

The upcoming introduction of VAR into the Guinean championship reflects a drive to improve refereeing quality, reduce decisive errors, and strengthen the credibility of local competitions.
