Sheffield United as a club have had a bizarre season when compared to other recent campaigns The status quo of Chris Wilder or Paul Heckingbottom as managers gave the Blades a solid foundation. The constant battles for promotion or survival against relegation made predicting where the Blades would finish more formulaic. A Championship season will see the Blades near the top, while a Premier League season is better left unmentioned.

But ripping up the status quo in the summer with the arrival of Ruben Selles and then re-hiring Chris Wilder. Led to and somewhat continues to lead to every facet of this season’s Sheffield United feeling a little off-kilter.

Perhaps, a strong example for this is Gustavo Hamer. The Championship’s reigning player of the season has been criticised at times. With some Blades wanting him out of the side to let Callum O’Hare thrive or to let the side become more a sum of its parts. Rather than one stand out.

The counter-claims have been remember what he’s done before. Or look at the individual moments of class he brings. For example his halfway line goal against Birmingham. Both of these are very valid points. But the bizarre part and the point of this article is, regardless of the criticisms of him this season. This campaign is set to deliver his best output numbers ever in a Blades shirt.

The Numbers

Last season in a better performing Blades side, Gustavo Hamer scored 10 goals and assisted eight times in 46 games in all competitions.

This season, despite playing in a mid-table side rather than one fighting for automatic promotion. Gus has four goals in all competitions in just 30 games. But most importantly, he has 10 assists in the league alone. The most of any player in the Championship.

It is important to note that Gus’ numbers haven’t been to his very high standards for the Blades all the way through this season. He has instead reasonably taken his time to readjust, like the rest of the squad, to Wilder’s return. Since the turn of the new year though, he has shown his true ability. Of the ten assists he’s made seven of them have come in his seven starts since Ipswich Town on 24 January 2026.

Once, he has been given a consistent run of appearances in the Blades side, Gus has thrived again. A run he earned after a stellar performance in the previously mentioned game against Ipswich. He bagged two assists, a reminder to Wilder and the rest of us watching of how much of a difference Hamer can make against quality opponents.

Above Par Hamer

Gustavo Hamer’s numbers at Sheffield United have been very impressive considering his entire spell at Bramall Lane in comparison to his time at Coventry City.

His best Championship season for output was 11 goals and 10 assists for Coventry in 2022/2023. Across his entire time with the Sky Blues, Hamer played 132 times and scored 19 goals and assisted 24 times. A goal contribution roughly every three games.

Whereas at United, he has played eighteen less games for the Blades (114), scoring 19 goals and assisting 26 times. Roughly a goal contribution every 2.5 games. It’s also important to note that he scored four goals and six assists in a Premier League season something he didn’t have to contend with at Coventry.

Therefore, Hamer has been consistent for the Blades. His numbers debunk the narrative that the Blades may be better without him. Or that his main use now are his stand out moments like his long range goals.

Callum O’Hare Collaboration Issue

Callum O’Hare has scored nine times in the league this season. But there has been an argument that the pair despite their previous connections at Coventry may play better without the other. Of O’Hare’s nine goals, six have come when Hamer hasn’t started for United including O’Hare’s recent goal against QPR last time out. Therefore, it is fair to suggest the pair may be reducing each other’s impact.

O’Hare’s last goal before QPR was assisted by Hamer against Ipswich in January. But even this doesn’t cure the trend that since Hamer’s recent resurgence O’Hare has been off the boil despite an arguable club player of the season worthy campaign.

Therefore, it is either a strange coincidence or perhaps it is that the pair can play together but they are more effective for United when played separately.

Takeaways

The point of this article is to give Gus his props for his output. As the Blades midfielder has been somewhat of a victim of his own high standards. When he’s at his best he can be a class above not only his teammates but the rest of the division. Therefore, it is easy to ask more of him even when the entire side get off to a slow start to the season.

Through leading the league assist charts, Hamer has shown just how good he is. As well as how important he is to Sheffield United. It just seems this year he has been more discreet about it.

The main question shouldn’t be are Sheffield United better without Gus Hamer? It should be how can the Blades successfully synchronise both him and O’Hare. If Chris Wilder can figure that out, the Blades will be firing goals in. With the Championship table becoming even more climbable.
