Erling Haaland scored five goals and set up two more as Norway thrashed Moldova 11-1 in World Cup qualification.

The Norwegians maintained their perfect record in Group I with a fifth consecutive qualification win. Haaland was at his destructive best as Norway scored 11 times, a result that saw the national team fall just short of their record 12-0 win over Finland in 1946.

It was the first time Haaland has scored five times in a game for Norway, who are edging closer to a first major tournament in 25 years. Norway have not reached a World Cup since France ’98. However, Ståle Solbakken’s side are six points clear of second-place Italy, having played a game more.

Haaland helped himself to a hat-trick before half-time and added two more after the break, while also setting up two goals for his teammates. Rangers midfielder Thelo Aasgaard also impressed with four goals off the bench.

Haaland is the leading scorer in UEFA’s World Cup qualification phase with nine goals and now boasts a record of 48 goals in 45 games for his country.

A stunning individual performance was the perfect warm-up for this weekend’s Manchester Derby in the Premier League.
