João Palhinha has not been happy at FC Bayern so far, but Didi Hamann believes he could make a fresh start after the Tottenham loan
João Palhinha has recently made an impressive comeback at Tottenham Hotspur, with the Portuguese on loan from Bayern becoming the match-winner on the last Premier League matchday, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win against Everton FC
For Spurs, it was an emotional end to a disappointing season overall. Thanks to the win, Tottenham finished just 17th in the league but fell far short of their own expectations. Palhinha, on the other hand, has been able to make a strong case for himself in recent weeks
Since Roberto de Zerbi took over as coach at the London club, the 30-year-old has been a fixture in defensive midfield. The Portuguese has played in every game under the new coach and clearly feels much more valued in London than he did previously at FC Bayern
TV pundit Dietmar Hamann assessed the situation on Sky after the last Tottenham game and also looked at Spurs‘ chances of keeping Palhinha beyond the end of the season. „Palhinha – you have to see (…) If they had been relegated, they wouldn’t have had a chance,“ explained Hamann. At the same time, he pointed out the economic dimension of a possible deal
The sticking point remains the transfer fee. „But Bayern paid 50 million, which they want back – I think it will still be difficult,“ Hamann made clear. From Munich’s point of view, it is therefore clear that a sale below value is hardly in the record champions‘ interest
This is precisely why an exciting constellation could arise in the summer. While Palhinha would like to stay with Tottenham beyond his current loan, Bayern are likely to look closely at how they plan to deal with the midfielder. A complete new start at Säbener Straße does not seem out of the question
According to BILD, however, a permanent move to Tottenham is currently the preferred option for Palhinha, with journalist Heiko Niedderer reporting on the Bayern Insider podcast that the Portuguese could well imagine staying in London
However, the decision does not lie solely with the player. Spurs would have to agree a transfer fee with FC Bayern. The current figure is said to be around 25 to 30 million euros, but Tottenham are apparently not prepared to pay this sum outright. According to Sky, the Londoners still want to renegotiate the transfer fee
In addition to Tottenham, a return to Portugal could also become an issue. According to A Bola, Sporting Lisbon are interested in Palhinha. Niedderer confirmed this lead to Bayern Insider and classified the report as „true“
Sporting in particular would have a special emotional significance for Palhinha. The club knows him, he knows the environment. Nevertheless, the financial implementation is likely to be difficult as long as FC Bayern insists on an appropriate transfer fee
Palhinha’s future therefore remains open, but one thing is clear: his strong weeks at Tottenham have improved his starting position. Whether this turns into a permanent transfer or FC Bayern plans a new start with the Portuguese is likely to be one of the exciting questions of the summer.
