After their draw in the UEFA Champions League match against Club Brugge, FC Barcelona returned to winning ways last night as they beat Celta Vigo, at the always difficult Balaidos, with a 4-2 scoreline.
With this win, the Blaugranes have cut their deficit at the top of the La Liga table to 3 points, as Real Madrid dropped points in their draw with Rayo Vallecano.
Hansi Flick was naturally happy with this win, and expressed his happiness with the result and the team’s performance as he talked to the media after the match.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the German coach was particularly happy with his Barcelona team’s second-half performance:
“Yes, of course I’m happy. I think we made more mistakes in the first half than in the second. In the first half, we did very well with the ball, and in the second, the team knew how to control the game.”
The Barcelona coach refrained from talking about this game as a turning point for his team:
“In football, the previous game doesn’t matter — you always have to look ahead to the next one. But it’s good to put pressure on the team at the top. The second half gives us confidence. I’m happy for the team.”
On the other hand, Flick was happy to see his team putting more pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the league table:
“Pressuring the opponent is good — we did it, and I’m happy. Winning before the league break is also very positive. I feel happy. We had to focus on ourselves, and today we applied the pressure well.”
Robert Lewandowski was the hero of this game with his hat-trick, and the German coach also talked about how he has improved since his return from injury:
“It’s too early to talk about Lewandowski’s season next year. What I can say is that after his injury, I’ve seen a different Robert — positive, confident, and it’s very important for us that he scored three goals.”
The Blaugrana tactician also spoke very highly of Frenkie de Jong:
“I think De Jong controlled the game and he’s very important for us… He’s playing at an incredible level. It’s not good that he’ll miss the next match because he’s key for us, but we’ll have to manage it. When we return from the break, I hope to have Pedri, Raphinha, and Joan available. We’ll see.”
The German coach also revealed that the atmosphere in the locker room is good after this win:
“In the locker room, everyone is satisfied and proud of the second half. I hope all the players return well after going with their national teams… For me, the most important thing is the second half. We’re on the right path in La Liga and in the Champions League. Not everything is perfect, but we’re doing well.”
Hopefully, Barcelona will be able to build on this win as they return to action after the November international break, and as Hansi Flick mentioned, the team will be boosted by the return of important players like Pedri, Raphinha, and Joan Garcia as well.
