FC Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the 2025–26 season in their recent UEFA Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Despite going toe-to-toe with the French champions for much of the match, the Blaugranes conceded a late goal that sealed a 2–1 loss, once again highlighting the team’s ongoing defensive vulnerabilities.

In response, head coach Hansi Flick has reportedly identified his ideal solution. According to Fichajes, the German tactician has urged club president Joan Laporta to prioritize the signing of Bayern Munich center-back Dayot Upamecano.

Upamecano, whose contract with Bayern Munich runs until 2026, has reportedly paused renewal talks, creating a potential opportunity for Barcelona. Hansi Flick is convinced that his arrival would immediately strengthen Barcelona’s backline.

The Barcelona coach believes €50 million-rated French defender possesses the strength, speed, and composure needed to anchor a defense capable of competing with Europe’s elite.

His leadership and Champions League experience would also make him a natural partner for Pau Cubarsi, potentially forming a duo that could define Barça’s defense for years to come.

President Joan Laporta has reportedly endorsed the move. With Upamecano potentially available as a free agent next summer, Barcelona could land a world-class defender without paying a transfer fee, although his wages would still pose a significant challenge.

Still, Laporta is said to view the signing as both a sporting and symbolic statement, reinforcing the club’s ambitions under Flick’s leadership.

The defeat to PSG has underscored the need for reinforcements, and the Blaugrana board appears aligned with Flick’s vision of adding a physically dominant, tactically astute defender to stabilize the backline.

However, Barcelona are not alone in their pursuit. Several European giants, including Real Madrid and Liverpool, are also monitoring Upamecano’s situation closely. Bayern, meanwhile, have yet to reach an agreement with the 26-year-old, and there is growing concern in Munich about losing one of their most reliable defenders.

For now, Upamecano remains committed to Bayern Munich, though he is reportedly open to pursuing a new challenge abroad, particularly one that offers stability and the opportunity to compete for major trophies.

Upamecano’s arrival could be transformative for Barcelona. Beyond his defensive qualities, his experience and winning mentality fit perfectly into the culture that Flick is trying to establish at Camp Nou.

For now, no formal move has been made, but there is little doubt that Dayot Upamecano would give Barcelona a highly effective centre-back capable of forming a long-term partnership with Pau Cubarsi.
