Last season, when Ruben Amorim stepped into the Manchester United hotseat, he increasingly relied on the club’s youth to bail the team out of danger.
He handed debuts to Chido Obi, Tyler Fredricson, and Harry Amass, and at one stage, the Red Devils were second in the list for minutes afforded to teenagers.
But this season, the head coach has hardly put his faith in Carrington graduates, as Kobbie Mainoo will attest to.
Rather surprisingly, despite the obvious lack of quality on the left flank, the 20-time English league champions opted to send Amass out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday, while choosing to keep new recruit Diego Leon at the club.
The Paraguayan has not managed to make his first team debut, and has looked raw when playing for the U21s, and there are plans to loan him out in January.
Interestingly, Amass’ loan contract with the Owls includes a break clause. The Championship side are desperate to keep him at the Hillsborough Stadium, but United want to revise certain terms before agreeing an extension.
As revealed by The Daily Mail, there is plenty of interest in the ex-Watford starlet’s services from both the Premier League and Championship.
Harry Amass has two years left on his current United contract, and his parent club have been in touch over a new and improved long-term deal.
“The phone has been ringing off the hook with loan interest from Premier League clubs and Championship rivals, United need to weigh up what their longer term plan is for the teenager – and how that impacts his contract.
“The key word from sources on this one is ‘patience’. While there is optimism that Amass, 18, can remain at Hillsborough for the remainder of the season, and Wednesday’s head of recruitment Kevin Beadell is in talks with United, Confidential understands that nothing has been decided right now.
“Amass has two years remaining on his deal at United, and while talks are ongoing about what the second half of the season holds, part of the discussions has also centred around a potential new and improved contract.”
His Player of the Month award at Sheffield Wednesday shows how quickly he has taken to life in the second division. United should ideally look to agree a new long-term deal and send him to a higher-placed Championship side or possibly even a Premier League team in the bottom half of the table.
