Leeds United striker Harry Gray has been left without a manager at Rotherham United after Matt Hamshaw was sacked on Wednesday morning following the 5-0 defeat at Peterborough United. The 17-year-old has a hamstring issue and is a doubt for Saturday’s trip to league leaders Lincoln City, with no guarantee a replacement will be in post before then.

The club said in a statement that Hamshaw had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect after Tuesday’s loss, adding that with nine games remaining and the team six points from safety in League One, action was required to boost survival hopes.

Gray has started all 12 previous League One matches since arriving on loan in January, scoring two goals in his first four outings. A change of manager could reduce his minutes for the rest of the spell.

Hamshaw, who signed Gray for the second half of the season, departs with 16 wins and 25 defeats from 53 matches in charge. The teenager missed Tuesday night’s game because of the hamstring problem.

This Rotherham stint is Gray’s first extended run in senior football. He made his competitive Leeds United debut last April in the 6-0 win over Stoke City on Championship promotion day.
