Leeds United loanee Harry Gray has received succinct guidance from Sheffield Wednesday great Chris Waddle as the 17-year-old begins a season-long spell at Hillsborough.

“Enjoy it. Wednesday have great fans, I had a great relationship with them. They like skill, they like creativity, they like players with imagination. I saw him play for Rotherham last year - he was in a team that was struggling and probably lost a bit of confidence,” Waddle told The Star.

“If he comes out the blocks with Barry Bannan around him giving him experience and pointing him in the right direction, we know he's got a lot of talent. The main thing at that age is to go there and enjoy it. Turning out in front of 30,000 fans - amazing.”

This is Gray’s second loan away from Leeds and his second step into League One, this time with a side chasing promotion rather than battling the drop. He scored three goals in Rotherham’s relegation fight and arrives at a club where expectations are rising after a tumultuous period under owner Dejphon Chansiri.

The forward has already linked up with Wednesday for pre-season and should be in line for friendly minutes soon. Former Owl and Leeds full-back Mel Sterland believes the 17-year-old can shine in South Yorkshire, viewing him as a versatile, combative talent who can operate up front or from midfield and finish chances. Sterland expects supporters to warm to Gray’s work-rate and sees considerable potential.
