Harry Kane admitted that England “need to be better” after they laboured to victory over Andorra.

The Three Lions ran out unconvincing 1-0 winners in Barcelona on Saturday evening after their captain found the net early in the second half.

The victory kept up England’s perfect start to life under Thomas Tuchel and they are top of their World Cup qualifying group after three games.

But Kane says he and his team-mates must improve after only narrowly beating the side ranked 173rd in the world by FIFA.

“We need to be better, for sure,” Kane told ITV. “Look, the June camp is never an easy camp.

“There are always people coming off the back of a lot of games, long seasons, and I think we saw that out there today - but we just have to learn from it.

“We got what we need, three points. We have a friendly on Tuesday now where we can learn again against an opposition (Senegal) we may come up against next year.

“It is one of those. I think, for sure, we can play better. It wasn’t our greatest performance. I don’t think many people will remember this one - but we can learn from it.

“It’s very hot here, dry pitch, probably similar conditions to maybe next year at the World Cup.

“We will go away and analyse. We had good spells in the game, but we couldn’t just consistently have attack after attack. We take the three points and we move on.”

Andorra made life difficult for England by sitting deep behind the ball and frustrating them with a dogged defensive display.

Kane’s goal looked like it would cause the floodgates to open, but England still struggled after that.

Asked why, Kane said: “A mixture of things, probably not good enough on the ball, not enough forward runs, forward passes and then, the most important thing, is we kept giving it away and it gave them a bit of confidence, a bit of energy.

“And then, look, a 1-0, with five or 10 minutes to go, you have to be careful because it is an important game for us to make sure we got the three points. It is what it is, we move on.”

One bright spark for England was Noni Madueke. The Chelsea winger looked sharp on his first appearance under Tuchel and set up Kane’s goal.

“I think he was a constant threat today,” said Kane. “Obviously he got the assist for the goal as well.

“But we need more of that. We have amazing players, we need players who are not afraid to get it one v one and if they lose the ball, just get it again and go again.

“Against these types of teams, you need that one-v-one quality because any team can sit back and defend and make it tough, like they did today.”
