Harry Kane was named man of the match as England opened their World Cup with a 4-2 win over Croatia, his fifth such award at the finals.

The Bayern striker missed a penalty, however goalkeeper Dominik Livaković was penalised for leaving his line and the kick was retaken. The 32-year-old converted, then struck again before half-time to draw level with Gary Lineker on 10 England World Cup goals.

Livaković had been the standout in two shootouts in 2018, yet his infringement here allowed Kane a second attempt.

Kane claimed three man of the match awards during his 2018 debut campaign, when he finished top scorer.

At Qatar 2022, he missed a penalty in the quarter-final defeat to France, having starred in the previous round against Senegal.
